The Governance Team Award provides MSBA the opportunity to recognize school boards and their superintendent for commitment to continuous improvement through ongoing professional development, regional and statewide leadership, and active participation in legislative advocacy for public schools and the students they serve.

Districts must fulfill the following criteria. No application is required.

  • The district is accredited.
  • The district is a member of MSBA.
  • All seven board members have completed Essential Certified Board Member certification by MSBA or have been grandfathered from the requirement.
  • At least two board members have achieved Advanced board member certification.
  • At least one board member has attained the Master board member certification.
  • At least a quorum of the board and the superintendent attended the most recent MSBA/MASA Annual Conference.
  • At least three board members and superintendent or other central office administrator attended the most recent MSBA Spring Regional Meeting.
  • A representative attended the most recent Legislative Forum or School Board Advocacy Network and documented communication with Legislator(s).
  • A board member representative participated in at least one Delegate Assembly during the year.

District status on the award criteria may be checked at any time by examining each board members’ transcript of attendance and credits by logging into My Account. The superintendent or board secretary can access all district board member transcripts. Individual board member transcripts can be accessed by each board member.

MSBA’s Outstanding Boards of Education Awards, administered by MSBA’s Leadership Development Committee, provide an opportunity to encourage effective board practices and recognize outstanding board performance in the following performance categories aligned with the Missouri Public Education Vision Project focus areas:

School boards may apply in only one of the above categories per year to be considered for outstanding board of education performance. Click on the category title above to view the performance criteria.

Eligibility to Apply
School boards that meet the following criteria are eligible to apply, including those receiving prior OBOE recognition:

  • MSBA member district
  • All 7 CBM Essentially certified by MSBA or grandfathered by March 1st of the award year
  • Earn at least 85% on the district Annual Performance Report (APR) for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 school years.

Winners in one category may apply in another category in subsequent years. Winners may not apply in the same category two years in a row. Winners may apply in an awarded category five years after the award.

To Apply
Select one of the categories to begin the online application. Save your completed application then email it to training@msbanet.org by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, 2017.

Application Preparation
The board’s online application must demonstrate evidence of preparation by board members and provide evidence of how the board demonstrates the criteria for the category in which it is applying. Responses are limited to the space provided. Additional pages, including appendices, will not be accepted or considered. After completing the online application, save the file and email it to training@msbanet.org no later than 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, 2017. Late applications will not be reviewed.

Application Review
Applications will be reviewed by the MSBA Leadership Development Committee. Applications are rated according to the degree to which there is clarity of the outstanding accomplishment, congruence of the evidence and board responsibility with the accomplishment, and quality of the evidence as it relates to the criteria for the category. All boards of education that score sufficiently will receive recognition as Outstanding Boards of Education in the respective category. Some categories may not have winners every year.

Selection and Announcement of Winners
Boards selected for recognition will be announced through various media and events during and after the MSBA Leadership Summit in June 2017.

Commitment of Winners
The Outstanding Boards of Education in each category will assist MSBA in promoting effective governance practices by sharing their outstanding accomplishments through various MSBA communication channels, including but not limited to publications, media outlets and/or presentations at meetings and the MSBA Annual Conference.
