Outstanding Boards of Education Award

MSBA’s Outstanding Boards of Education Awards, administered by MSBA’s Leadership Development Committee, provides an opportunity to encourage effective board practices and recognize outstanding board performance in the following performance categories aligned with the Missouri Public Education Vision Project focus areas:

Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Human and Organizational Capital
Climate, Culture and Organizational Efficacy
School Finance Resources
Physical and Environmental Resources
Governance, Leadership and Accountability

School boards may apply in only one of the following categories per year to be considered for outstanding board of education performance. Click on the category title above to view the performance criteria.

Eligibility to Apply

School boards that met the following criteria are eligible to apply, including those receiving OBOE recognition prior to 2013:

I. Met Both of these Standards 

  • MSBA member district
  • All 7 CBM Essentially certified by MSBA or grandfathered by March 30 of the award year

  AND

II. Met This Standard 

  • Earned 85% on district Annual Performance Report (APR) for the current and previous school years

Application Categories

School boards may apply in only one of the following categories per year to be considered for outstanding board of education performance.  Those districts that have previously won the award may still apply, must do so in a different category. Click here to view the performance criteria.

Application Preparation

Eligible school board members will describe, in the online application, how the board is demonstrating the criteria for the category in which they are applying.  The board’s online application must demonstrate evidence of preparation by board members.  Responses are limited to the space provided.  Additional pages, including appendices, will not be accepted or considered.  After completing the online application, save the file and email it to Training@msbanet.org  no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 13th.  Late applications will not be reviewed.

Application Review

Applications will be reviewed by the MSBA Leadership Development Committee and staff in the Leadership Development Department.  Applications will be rated according to the degree to which there is clarity of the outstanding accomplishment, congruence of the evidence and board responsibility with the accomplishment, and quality of the evidence as it relates to the criteria for the category.  All boards of education that score sufficiently will receive recognition as Outstanding Boards of Education in the respective category.  Some categories may not have winners every year. 

Selection and Announcement of Winners

Boards selected for recognition will be announced through various media and events during and after the MSBA’s Leadership Summit.

Commitment of Winners

The Outstanding Boards of Education in each category will assist MSBA in promoting effective governance practices by sharing their outstanding accomplishments through various MSBA communication channels, including but not limited to publications, media outlets and/or presentations at meetings and conferences.
