MSBA announces 2008 Outstanding Board of Education finalists

Five Missouri school boards are finalists for the 2008 Outstanding Board of Education Award sponsored by the Missouri School Boards' Association. The five finalist districts are Grain Valley R-V, Lindbergh R-VIII, Pattonville R-III, Platte County R-III, and School of the Osage R-II.

MSBA's Board Services Committee met in Columbia recently to review the applications of twenty-five semifinalist school boards competing for the award. The committee, comprised entirely of currently serving school board members from around the state, identified the five finalists.

Board members and superintendents from the five finalist districts will gather in Columbia on Saturday, October 18, where each finalist district will be interviewed by a panel of Missouri school board members regarding their district's approach to executing the fundamental principles and complex challenges of school board governance.

The state winner of the 2008 OBOE will be announced Saturday, October 25, at the banquet session of the MSBA Annual Conference in cooperation with the Missouri Association of School Administrators.

The twenty-five semifinalist districts from which the five finalists were chosen prepared exhaustive applications as a part of the process, and were themselves selected from a field of thirty-three nominees, all of which place in the top half of Missouri districts for both academic achievement and academic improvement.

The Missouri School Boards' Association salutes all of this year's nominees, semi-finalists, and finalist districts for their excellence in school governance.
