MSBA convenes autism task force

The number of children diagnosed with autism continues to increase at an alarming rate in Missouri and throughout the nation. In order to address the implications of this trend for Missouri's public schools, MSBA has convened an Autism Task Force made up of experts from state agencies, universities and private associations. The group is charged with:

  • Improving the understanding among associations, agencies and parents of the role of public education in providing education and related services to children with autism;
  • Providing a forum for open discussion on issues and recommendations relative to the education of children with autism; and
  • Seeking methods by which all stakeholders can advance and improve comprehensive services to children with autism.

The MSBA Autism Task Force will work closely with the MSBA Autism Advisory Panel, which was formed to better inform the association's advocacy efforts. The Advisory Panel is made up of educators and autism specialists from school districts throughout the state. Legislation on the issue of autism is likely to be introduced during the 2009 session of the Missouri General Assembly.
